The Union Jacking Up 1985
Watched as part of the Leigh Bowery exhibition at the Tate Modern. Naturally I was overjoyed to see Channel 4 work as part of the exhibition - a nice reminder of the importance of my research and Channel 4’s support of marginalised artists and narratives.
John Maybury forever, video art forever, punk art forever 💓

A bit heavy for 8:45am on a Wednesday morning but what a solid start to LFF! absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking (as expected) - the chemistry between Wright and O’Connor was divine. The way Wright dominates the screen throughout! Delectable!
Devastating storyline underpinned with a blossoming friendship-turned-romance between the two. Typically I would despise this, but their shy, childlike interactions were gorgeous and really encapsulated the safety they felt in each other’s presence (an unusual feeling for both of them I’m sure given their backgrounds).
Loved it x

I read Akerman’s My Mother Laughs a few years back, and watching this knowing the circumstances around it (pre, during, and post) is really difficult.
I couldn’t help but think about Wiseman’s docs during the long observational shots, and how Akerman handles them with such a quietness and care. The love for her mother seeps through this in every moment.
