As someone who is a massive Nintendo fan, I really enjoyed seeing all the references and Easter Eggs they put in this movie, as well as the accuracy to the games thanks to Miyamoto himself. However, it was literally exactly what I was (or anyone) was expecting. Very cut-and-paste textbook modern 3D-animated kids' film. Illumination did not try to hide or stray away from the formula.
