Inseparable from Miyazaki, specifically Nausicaa, except without the tenacity to truly indulge into themes of capitalist expenditure on human consciousness. The creepers, emulations of Miyazaki’s Ohms, are portrayed as rather barbaric in their approach to reconciliation. “Blood must be repayed with blood” is so ridiculous when you recognize that the Ohm were forgiving creatures of nature. The films on the nose approach to settler colonialism makes this portrayal promote colonial stereotypes, which is what the film attempts to satirize.

If you’ve watched the source material, you’ll realize this movie had so much potential if it kepts its content like the first half, where Tony Leung gets to shine

While less politically driven than the film initially assumes, The Manchurian Candidate provocatively expresses that it might have to be radical revolutionary actions that can free us from McCarthyism, as well as greater authoritarianism symbolized by the hypnotism. While certain scenes have not aged well, it is quickly overlooked through the stunning attention to camerawork.
