    12 years later we recognize it was a genius crystal ball into our future. About 50 years later I think it’ll be seen as one of our great cultural landmarks. The most important film of the 21st century so far.

    Two things I clued in on this time around.

    1. The idea of truth. Mark’s story is told through the depositions of others. Often what is cleared up in the lawyer scenes is contradictory to how the film just portrayed…

    “Go west old man, and grow young with the county”

    Proof beyond any doubt that Ford also had a lot on his mind in The Searchers.

    This one takes some time before it becomes another clever deconstruction of the west. The setups are familiar, the dialogue almost cliched, but it’s still a brilliantly acted and enjoyable genre movie.

    And then that second hour kicks in, and like peeling back the layers of an onion, every trope and theme is turned…

    Some observations from another of many future viewings.

    I love the score so much. The droning, deeply unsettling strings put the vibe of the whole thing towards Kubrick and Lean, away from Ford and Leone. So unique among westerns. Shoutout the dedication to Robert Altman at the end, sort of ironic as I’d say this is his least Altman-like film.
