I’ll start be saying I have a little bias here. Matt Lawrence was a professor of mine at Stockton - so he literally taught me about film. How to make and analyze it. We also share many of the same affinities - punk rock, New Jersey, video stores, etc. I loved his last movies Uncle Peckerhead, and while I appreciated the world that Bloody Axe Wound built, I just thought it resulted in (if you think about it a little…

A film about hustle, lust, loneliness, intimacy, tradition, the poison of money, and so much more.

From the first frames, you fall in love with Ani and her grind and aspiration. You want to hit Ivan in the head a thousand times. You hate then cheer for Igor. Then you cry about it all falling apart. I guess that attachment makes this a truly great exercise in story.

A little disjointed and perhaps one too many dream scenes (Marilyn should do a sleep study) but makes up for it in other ways.

*Real* Ejaculation. Giant stinking human raisins. Penis mutilation. Genuinely beautiful shots of witches in the snow. Smudges on lens and random fish eyes.

What else could you ask for in a SOV?

(Reading the booklet interview that came with the film about how the director spent time in the adult film world helped make sense of some of this.)
