    I had heard barely any of the songs before watching this, but I still enjoyed it a lot!

    Like Father, Like Son

    Kore-eda is fast becoming one of my favourite directors.

    All the characters were so interesting, and the film treats them with a lot of care.

    One of the scenes in the movie reminded me of a scene in Columbus, and another reminded me of a scene in After Yang. It’s possible it’s just a coincidence, but know Kogonada, I assume it was intentional.

    “More than you, daddy?” 😭

    - funny all the way through!
    - unpredictable through out; the movie goes directions that you don’t expect, but still make perfect sense in its world

    If I have any criticism, it’s that the character shift at the start of the movie is a bit abrupt and doesn’t feel super believable. But it’s early enough that you can kind of ignore the part before, and the rest of the movie is so good that it more than makes up for it.

    I remember reading this review for I Wish (2011) and the part that really resonated with me was the part about childhood being a time where you have no agency: “things happen to you, and often the best you can do is react the best you can”. If you’re lucky, the things that happen are what you want. If you’re not lucky, you’ve got all these changes occurring around you, and you’re stuck trying to figure out how to deal with it.…
