Au Hasard Balthazar 1966
To be able to watch the foundation of a visual language and an art form nearly 60 years later is truly a gift. The building blocks of cinema are present here in a way that feels both familiar, and simultaneously, foreign. It’s like going back in time and seeing infinite possibilities, while still knowing that there is one that will inevitably play out.
Two major takeaways: 1) hands can be more honest than faces 2) it’s all been done before, and that’s a beautiful thing

The Brutalist 2024
Dark, honest, raw, funny, and singular. It’s rare to see a film that so beautifully matches substance and heart with taste and style. For me this film feels the way a peaty scotch smells or live jazz sounds - just buzzing with palpable energy and texture. The fact that this film was made for 10mil can only be described as a true cinematic achievement. Despite an emotionally challenging second half, this is easily my favorite of the year so far, and one that I believe will stand the test of time.
