  Shortbus is melodramatic, a little saccharine, a little problematic; but it’s also so sweet. I smiled and laughed at moments I would have never expected to on paper. There’s a powerful warmth and tenderness to the sexual openness of this film that is strangely welcoming once all that religious-kid-branded shame washed off. 

  I found myself wondering why I have no issue with material like this when it’s drawn, or when it’s explicitly pornographic. Why did this make me *more* uncomfortable?…

  I know the credits being in the middle exists to maintain the two episode format of the original TV ending, but man does it also work brilliantly as a way to hold the viewer captive with their feelings as well.   This movie expertly takes what’s essentially the material of 6 episodes of TV and remixes it with some new elements into a complete story with its own arcs, themes, and hints at the future.
