After just having finished the book I thought I’d revisit the film, and am happy to say Cronenberg did a superb job adapting it. The period is extremely well preserved and the grimey atmosphere is thick and immersive. Sets and locations are perfectly curated to match descriptions from the novel, you can tell a lot of time was taken to get everything just right. Erratic. Liminal. Ominous.
David Lynch has constructed a cinematic labyrinth of bizarre deviance and avant-garde fever dreams with Inland Empire, his creativity truly knows no bounds. The sound design was unbelievable, as was his writing and direction, a genuine polymath of the arts.
Laura Dern gave an unforgettable performance and the rest of the cast certainly followed suit.
A brilliant surrealist nightmare.
