Andrew Scott Takes on Ripley
Even for an actor as skilled as Andrew Scott, playing a character as infamous as Tom Ripley poses a serious creative challenge. Since the release of Patricia Highsmith’s now canonical 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, the elusive, murderous grifter has become a fixture in the cultural imagination. He’s headlined multiple novels and movie adaptations — meaning that almost everyone is acquainted with at least one incarnation of Tom Ripley.
Hear that? No, it’s not Mahler’s Second — it’s the sound of Maestro racking up Academy Award nominations. Bradley Cooper’s swooning Leonard Bernstein love story is nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress. And he’s not alone: Netflix received 18 nominations across 10 titles, including American Symphony, May December, NYAD, Rustin, Society of the Snow, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, El Conde, The After and Nimona.
Don’t worry, there’s still plenty of time to check out the year’s nominees. The 96th Academy Awards will air on ABC starting at 4:00 p.m. PT/7:00 p.m.ET on Sunday, March 10.
