  Lanthimos' characters are, essentially, so disturbing/fascinating because engaging in social behaviours completely alien from ours, yet they exist in what could be our neighbour's house, our hospitals, our summer hotel, or our past...
  IMHO, once they have been situated in a fantasy world, and their behaviour is explained through the logic of that world, their bizarreness ends up losing much of its appeal.

  The movie is not perfect: Adrien Brody plays a beaten dog for the entirety of it, some sections that are meant to be profound could have been taken from a high schooler's private journal, and other reviewers have written about misery porn or rescue complex. Probably, a critical viewer would find much to laugh at.

  But just like our suspension of disbelief helps us enjoy free-mindedly entertainment products on a daily basis, closing an eye on some of the surface…
