Movie #2 in my Ghibli movie marathon in Japan. Forever beautiful, gentle, and loving. The older I get the more I admire Chihiro's bravery - and how that bravery is not about overcoming her fears / bettering herself, it isn't a self-benefitting project, it's about loving people and helping those you love.
Also: I want to just take so many shots and frame them. They're just so laden with emotions. My favorite will always be that house, in the middle of the water, seen as the train clacks by.
The last third was much better than the first 2/3rd. Highlight was for sure the most hilarious sex scene I've seen ever in the middle. Maam the marble staircase?!
A really simple message about how we need to live in the present, not the nostalgic past, upsettingly ruined by the main character being an unlikable snob (I love likable snobs, my issue is not the snobbery but the unlikability - no infidelity's not cute, no looking down on your girlfriend's not cute, no yearning for intellectualism without passionate nerdiness or romanticism without deep emotionality is not cute; just shallow).
