    Margin Call

For several years, I’ve observed high finance through forums and social media. While I don’t want to work in banking, I’ve realized much of our country’s economic value stems from it.

Margin Call suggests bankers are self-aware. While vain, they see the importance of their choices. This characterization may be incorrect, but it creates a compelling dilemma: does minimizing loss for your firm justify guaranteeing a mass devaluation of mortgage-backed securities?

An aside. It fascinates me that economies are susceptible…

    In the Mood for Love

    ★★★★½

I wasn’t expecting Spanish Nat King Cole in this Hongkonger film.

Watching In the Mood for Love reminded me that I am easily affected by the decisions of others. While I can and should decide how to react, I still feel disappointment, frustration, curiosity. Those are strong motivators.

    Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning

I’ve been thinking about this movie and another I watched recently: Fast X. The contexts surrounding both films are remarkably similar. The Fast and The Furious (2001) and Mission: Impossible (1996) debuted within 5 years of each other. Both franchises focus on a small collection of stars and build ensemble casts around them. As time has passed, both franchises have ceded control to their lead actors. Cruise and Diesel are even similar; both emphasize masculinity in their roles, both are…

    Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey

    ★★

Although I appreciate this movie’s attempt to diverge from its predecessor, the result is a lesser film. Bogus Journey’s scope (heaven, hell, the future, martians, good and evil robots!?) coupled with it’s absurdism, causes it to feel like a series of sketches from the Idiot Box. While I enjoyed certain characters and performances (like William Sadler), the movie’s lack of cohesion pushed Bogus Journey toward incoherence.

I do wonder if the movie’s style helps explain why Alex Winter and Keanu…
