What stood out to me was how painful and eerie it was that the only times Caden would look up from his own life and troubles would be at the end of the lives of others and typically for selfish reasons. Funerals, reconnecting with his daughter, suicide attempts, sexual flings. The only time he really paid attention to someone else but himself was when it was convenient and that usually meant it was way too late. Watching someone miss infinite chances for empathy and companionship eats at you for two hours.
