There is something beautifully nostalgic about this film that is difficult to explain. It finds its footing in the grounds of reality and honesty and despite its slow burn, Kore-Eda Hirokazu's impeccable story telling lends itself to a poignant and lingering feeling of catharsis. Not only is this a film about what it means to be a father or a parent, it is a film about responsibility, rediscovery and acceptance. It is beautifully shot, wonderfully acted and leaves the viewer with a new sense of self perception.
