The Devil's Advocate 1997
Satan; maybe the last humanist.
An oddly seductive legal thriller with lofty ambitions. Two idiosyncratic leads in Reeves and Pacino blowing/tumbling their way through first-rate pomp to one hell of a crescendo. It's not all carried through - the domestic side of things spins it's wheels when it runs out of juice despite a strong start that feeds well into the overarching themes. It's strange and it's vain and it's pretty damn entertaining for the most part. I'm for it.

A great encapsulation of how paradoxical grief can be. Quietly devastating, sentimental, and really gorgeous. Tightly focused, but uses the lingering moments to speak. The indefiniteness of everything, how it all blends into one unreality where people you know or knew pass around like ghosts, is really affecting.
