Quite touching and poignant with a wonderful performance by USA Semkhum as 'Mah'. Lots of insights into Thai culture and society. Exploring similar themes to 'The Farewell', but not quite as sharp or witty. But worth a watch.
By turns poignant and funny, this story of a labour camp escapee and an orphan both seeking a small piece of celluloid in Cultural Revolution-era rural China is beautifully told and wonderfully shot. Shades of Cinema Paradiso but less sentimental. Available on MUBI.
Kate Winslet is excellent as Lee Miller. Andy Samberg, for once playing a non-comedic role, is great in support. Marion Cottillard felt a little wasted in her cameo, although was great as always. I felt the film meandered and dragged a little in the first third - the impending cataclysm could perhaps have been more sharply drawn. But once Miller and Samberg arrive in France, the film really gets into its stride, although it perhaps didn't offer any great new insights into the harsh realities facing war correspondents. Special mention to Andrea Risborough as the Vogue editor doing editorial battle on Lee Miller's behalf.
A great cast is let down by a weak story and script - surely they could have spent some of the enormous budget on another re-write?!
