Boy Swallows Universe 2024
Is anything set in the 80s ever bad? This story managed to pack a punch, deftly addressing addiction, incarceration, childhood trauma, domestic violence and bullying through the childlike lens of Eli and Gus, caught in the absolute thick of it. The heavy subject matter is beautifully situated in the warmth and nostalgia of Australian suburbia with all its thong wearing, fishing and bike riding (and esky drug dealing of course). Barbie and the Diamond Castle 2008
Minus half a star for the fact that these poor, starving girlies never thought to plant veggies in their massive flower garden so they COULD eat something other than ‘bread and jam, or jam and bread!’ Apart from that, NO NOTES, A MASTERPIECE OF CINEMA, maybe life itself REALLY IS the friends we made along the way (the friends being two dancing dogs, a random girl stuck inside a mirror and a set of British twins who apparently have nothing going in their lives except for chasing two girls around barbie land in a quest to save humanity from the worst fate imaginable, no MUSIC 😭)
