My favourite ever movie. I don’t believe there is a better viewing experience than watching the Thing with a group of friends, especially if they have never seen it before. You know a film is special when a 90 minute movie is followed by an hour long breakdown of the EXACT order of what just happened, and only upon doing so is the genuine brilliance of Carpenter’s story communicated.

In a genre that has become frankly a little bloated in recent years, sometimes you have to revisit the classics. The Wicker Man is THE daddy of Folk horror. Lean, simple and effective, this film has no delusions of grandeur. Not as good as I remember it being. Absolutely beautiful, but compared to the first is quite sloppy in its message and in the mystery itself. The final third is a total mess, and while the very good cast are clearly having fun, the script isn’t tight enough to keep up with them though. Still an enjoyable watch, but a disappointing sequel given the excellence of the original.

Do you hate capitalism? If the answer is yes, then you may enjoy this film. In this adaptation of the Grimm brothers popular fable, Hamelin is transformed into a hellscape, a festering pit of corruption spawning evil into the world. The artistry on display is spectacular, with the character carved from wood rather than the clay more commonly seen in stop motion, and is influenced both by cubism and German expressionism, despite its Czech origins. Rats swarm from the walls,…
