Stupid irreverent fun, with a density of pop culture references that threatens to collapse it into a black hole, but at the heart of the meta jokes is a an adorable fondness for the whole messy history of comic book movies. Unless you are absolutely steeped in that culture you'd find a lot to be bored and confused about here, but that ain't me, cher.
Roald Dahl + Wes Anderson is wonderful indeed.
Megalopolis feels like seeing one of my dreams put to film; with all the disjointed dream logic and striking imagery that entails. Unique in its combination of stylistic and visual creativity, horrendous dialogue, surreal structure, enjoyably over-the-top performances, and adolescent philosophy. It's absurdity, grandiosity, ambition, and failings are so vast as to be riveting. It is too unique and stylish to be truly bad, and too poorly crafted and empty to be truly genius. That leaves Megalopolis in the place…
