There is an inevitability in the interchanging scenes of Lynne Ramsay's visual interpretation of Lionel Shriver's novel. We are taken from the dreamy red of the carefree opening to the wicked reality of Eva Khatchadourian's (Tilda Swinton) life. Guilt, isolation and the complexity of human relationships are the overwhelming themes, and we are introduced to them in blatant bucket-fulls, though not always clearly.

Had I written this review a year ago, the rating would be a conclusive 5 stars. In the headiness of watching this film, it is hard not to get sucked into it's epic flow, from humble drama to its disturbing climax.
