Limbo 2021

Generic, bland and cliched throughout. There’s barely any original thought in the film and aesthetically, the post-converted black and white looks terrible. Frames are overstuffed and the camera is too tight even though the film is presented in widescreen. That being said, a handful of wide establishing shots of Hong Kong’s skyline are jaw-droppingly gorgeous and more revealing than the other film, which is essentially all design without atmosphere or merit. In these shots, light pierces into the viewer like seldom seen before. A shame the film went astray elsewhere.

Megalopolis 2024

A narrative and aesthetic disaster and, detached from the film’s origin and Coppola’s passion, frequently soulless, draining and arrogant. Coppola trusts us to find a sense of beauty, purpose and truth within all that plastic, fake, digital garbage but without providing a genuine sense of transcendence that lies at the foundation of the story, it’s ultimately a nonsensical treatment on nothing at all.
