  A wise man once said: "Drinking is another way of thinking, another way of living. It gives you two lives instead of one."

  And I think that's the metaphor here. Substance abuse. Two lives instead of one. The problem is the balance. Life #2 wants to take over. Life #1 deteriorates. The downward spiral. Body horror ensues.

  The pain of taking your new girlfriend to meet your parents for the first time. And/or the pain of going on a long excruciating trip to rural America (hillbilly country) with your new boyfriend to meet his horrible parents for the first time. The horror of being in a relationship with another human being at all. Learning to know that person, his least flattering traits, his inadequacy, his parents, the miserable place he grew up.
