  Perhaps not the greatest treatment of the great novel, but absolutely fantastic acting by John Hurt and brilliant, early cinematography by Roger Deakins. More humanistic than politically charged and manages to really move you.

  Incredible film. Might have to raise it to a 4.5 eventually. Very moving and raw portrayal of total and utter human vulnerability. The open ending was perfect and the three main actors’ performances were absolutely flawless. Beautifully shot on film (I think) and the subtle cinematography managed to perfectly enhance the deep emotions in the film.
