Unforgiven ages well. It’s tender and elegiacal.

    Overly affected and ineffective.
It is a great ask to film an entire story with point of view shots, it makes the film experiential. But its effect then depends on a viewer’s experience. Here with his very deliberate choice the director removes us from the emotions of his characters, and their story comes off as very flat. We see what they see but cannot feel what they feel. A simple reaction shot, even of an unmoved face, goes a long way. See Pudovkin.

    Spare sounds.
Frames that evoke shadows and geometry from German Expressionist films.
A restrained and dignified performance from Ralph Fiennes.
A metaphor for recent events and current world dynamics.
    Hopeful, after all.

A whimsical joyful film, with an underlying sadness that surfaces at the end, in a sequence reminiscent of Chaplin’s “City Lights.”
It’s a screwball comedy given a modern energy. Mikey Madison is captivating and so endearing, and we want so much to see her taken care of.
The heart of the film pulses underneath the story, given barely a word until the end, but Baker makes sure we feel it all along.
