Nickel Boys 2024
Overly affected and ineffective.
It is a great ask to film an entire story with point of view shots, it makes the film experiential. But its effect then depends on a viewer’s experience. Here with his very deliberate choice the director removes us from the emotions of his characters, and their story comes off as very flat. We see what they see but cannot feel what they feel. A whimsical joyful film, with an underlying sadness that surfaces at the end, in a sequence reminiscent of Chaplin’s “City Lights.”
It’s a screwball comedy given a modern energy. Mikey Madison is captivating and so endearing, and we want so much to see her taken care of.
