Oh man, oh man, what a ride! Let’s start with the positives - unbelievably tight direction. This is a movie that demands your attention, and all of it. One of the most well lit films I’ve seen in a long time, and probably the only one that uses split screen flawlessly. I want to press the 5 star rating on this for so many reasons. Darkly hilarious, morbidly violent and, 50% of the time, potently poignant. However, Trier’s genius is almost always muddled by his ego. His need to make self-aggrandising gestures and falsely meaningful monologues ruins the pacing of the final half of the film. It also pulled me out of the world that Matt Dillon had so eloquently brought me in to (holy shit he was fantastic in this).
