I didn't expect to have such a strong reaction to The Fabelmans, given that Spielberg for the last ten years has mostly seemed like a bored master. It's a film about the impossibility of ever really seeing someone, be it through the camera, through one's eyes, or through memory. The film highlights the melancholic beauty of trying anyway, which might be the essence of Spielberg's cinema.
This movie loves white quirkyness. But if you're a Japanese wife, no love for you, just laughter from the audience. Great horror movie about little passive aggressive gestures. It's like Showgirls and Mulholland Drive in that it's about how show business destroys female camaraderie. And it rejects the cruel binary of "strong" and "weak" women. Great performances by Caitlin FitzGerald and Mackenzie Davis.
