This exquisite genre-bending film is a horror piece but also a fairy-tale-ish musical and a lesbian romance. Featuring terrific performances, an inventive narrative, and stunning visuals the film wisely uses fantasy to raise questions about racial, social, and class issues in Brazil. One of my favorites this year.

It just feels sad to think about how this documentary couldn't quite manage the storytelling of such an incredible story. The film is organized based on plot-twists, that appears numerous times throughout its length. The major strategy seems to be to hold crucial characters, events, and information until the very end to build the stage for the surprises and revelations.
