Truly breathtaking, to think a film of this caliber can be made with free software and a team less than a quarter of the size of most other major animation studios is absolutely mind boggling. Ideas, skill, and passion will always out weigh budget and status when it comes to delivering lasting, impactful art.

Mickey 17 2025
I definitely feel the need to rewatch this so I can get my bearings on the sheer density of this film, but overall had a fun time. A weaker director would crumble beneath the weight of this much complexity in concept and theme, however I did feel the film’s focus drift more than in previous Bong Joon Ho outings, which made this feel tedious to sit through at times. That being said, I never felt lost by the plot or distracted by over bearing symbolism; just a wild ride with a goofball of a protagonist, or rather protagonists.

Dune: Part Two 2024
Might have to let the dust settle to give a more unbiased perspective, but as of now this is the pinnacle of science fiction for me. Making the astronomical feel spiritual is what many sci-fi directors and authors attempt, but for my money Denis is the only one to truly achieve it.

Spirited Away 2001
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Everything Chihiro experiences in this film is pretty horrifying, this world she stumbles into having no sympathy for her naivety and holding her accountable for her family’s transgressions with harsh rules and steep consequences for breaking them. Despite these morbid threats, Chihiro never succumbs to the pressure or allows her heart to waiver, ultimately leading to her triumphant exit from this ghostly plane. The very brutal moments in this film help magnify the tender ones, resulting in a story with the gravity of a cautionary folktale and the warmth of deeply genuine in-person connection, a combination that only Miyazaki can execute this perfectly.
