Similar to 2023's Saltburn, Emerald Fennel seems to relish the idea of style over substance, with a meaningful narrative taking a backseat to aesthetics. Likewise, the saving grace of both films was the performances of their respective leads, with Carey Mulligan delivering perhaps a career-highlight performance.
It appears highly ironic that the same systems heavily criticized throughout the film for their apathy are utilised as the final 'gotcha!' in the ultimately unsatisfying revenge plotline.
