A friend's pick for our Criterion group. I'll have to give this one a fresh watch when I'm not having to deal with a number of distractions, and preferably after I can dig into some of Woolf's writing. The acting is mesmerizing, especially Kidman and Moore, and I like how the intercutting and running loop of Philip Glass music almost creates a meditation on depression and disconnect, of people feeling trapped in lives and expectations they didn't get to choose.…
The Shudder group decided to do a night of assorted shorts this week. This is a delightful tokusatsu parody short by the Europe Kikaku troupe (Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes, River) promoting a small town and its mascot, as a vigilante tries to get a job and a kaiju event unfolds. It's a bit loosely paced and structured, but takes some really fun turns.
Charles Dance is such a dapper Phantom, such a formal yet laid back and charming obsessive serial killer, and I like how much the story leans into both his creative and destructive sides and how he ultimately keeps tearing himself down even as he says the world is the one rejecting him. Got to treat my whole local movie night group to a screening of this one. It's magnificent, almost using Godzilla as a gateway to get viewers to explore a gripping drama about trauma and found families of a social apocalypse who are bound together by survivor's guilt. I've seen some... not exactly criticism, but more concern, that this is a film exploring nationalistic themes, especially with the American's bowing out and our lead being a failed kamikaze pilot.
