Not the funniest Monty Python film - for my money, that's The Holy Grail - but certainly the most pointed, affecting and significant. The satire of organised religion and its co-option by sinister and cynical forces is very sharp, as is the assault on the unthinking credulity of the masses (false consciousness, indeed). The best jokes - Biggus Dickus and the like - are worth the price of admission alone.
This is one of about 20 films that I can't view with any objectivity at all, having watched it annually since I was a little'un. It may be great, or it may be pretty ropey (Bill Murray's final monologue is certainly borderline deranged). I can quote long tracts of it and still find quite a few bits uncontrollably funny.
Likeably oddball paean to Hitchcock, Lynch and dozens of neo-noirs, heavily allusive and apparently devised after an overdose of postmodern theory. I'm not sure what it amounts to, but it's a very stylish and enjoyable ride.
