I Was a Simple Man is a deeply unsettling, thought-provoking film that raises uncomfortable questions about the nature of life and death. Watching Masao reflect on all the failures in his lifetime is heartbreaking, and seeing how his family disliked him at his death scared me to my core about my own future. Masao's story is a tragedy, one of loss and mistakes that all come crashing down on him in his final moments as he struggles with an unnamed…

The Worst Person in the World

    ★★★★½

The Worst Person in the World is a wonderful film that kept me engaged and invested in its characters for the entire runtime. From Julie to Aksel, no character in this film is truly a good or bad person, they each make mistakes and struggle in their own ways. No one is trying to be a villain, a concept that makes the conflicts and losses in the movie all the more tragic. Seeing Aksel and Julie struggle to find themselves…

    Licorice Pizza

    ★★½

Licorice Pizza is a introspective coming of age film that often times lacks direction. The movie completely sucks you into it’s 1970’s setting, complete with Richard Nixon and waterbeds. However, characters lack compelling through lines between the eclectic events of the film, with scenes feeling disconnected from the next with little purpose. This is obviously an artistic choice of the film, and one that is not suited for my tastes. Someone who enjoys watching normal (ish) people go about their lives will love this film, but for me, I would much prefer a more engaging plot and better defined character arcs.
