  This is easily del Toro's most underrated film. It's got all of the style and storytelling of his other films wrapped up in a subversive period piece. I loved it a lot more than I was expecting.

  This is such an odd followup to Pusher. Refn starts slowing down and giving those contemplative moments that are one of his best tricks today. It lacks the surrealism of his later work, but this film could match the brutality. The physical violence is bad, but what really gets to me is watching someone's mind slip away into hate. It's hard to watch.
