An absolute trance-like dream. And like most of my dreams, I woke up impressed by the imagery, wondering where all the pieces came from, and how they fit together. Sure, there are plenty of themes that resonate with Tarkovsky’s own lived experience in exile from the USSR. Ultimately Tarkosvky stiches together some of the most beautiful shots in cinema history, and lets you find your own breadcrumbs from which to derive a greater meaning.

A fun time at the movies, especially in IMAX.
However, I was a bit surprised how much the themes here are beaten to death with dialogue (especially given the director). As a result, the tone is a bit confusing. Is it over-explaining that xenophobia is bad because it’s for kids? Then why is there a 3some scene? If it’s for adults, then why not let us read in between the lines?
Mr Pattinson is quite fantastic though, my other gripes aside.

The Professor, The Writer, The Stalker, his wife, and their monkey
Saw this at IFC Center with a fully packed house. I couldn’t imagine seeing this film at home, with all the distractions that brings. The long, multi-minute tracking shots that take you along on the introspective and spiritual journey would be no match for the urge to grab your phone. (Or maybe I have no discipline lol.) The movie is challenging and asks a lot from its viewers.
