    Although The Substance owes quite a bit of its identity to better directors (Lynch, Cronenberg, Kubrick) it's a generally worthwhile watch on its own merit as well. The last 30 or so minutes feel self-indulgent, and, in my opinion, wildly clash with the ideas presented previously in the film, but overall this film is entertaining and even bleakly humorous at times. Whoever wrote that review about how this movie almost feels mean-spirited was spot on.

    i really, really wish i liked this more. unfortunately, i felt that the plot was unbelievably underdeveloped and the pacing was agonizingly slow, so this one missed the mark for me. i understand that the slow pacing was a deliberate artistic decision, but the overarching allegory of the film is paper-thin and achingly obvious, so 2.5 hours of beating the audience over the head with the same ideas felt more repetitive than anything else.
