preliminary thoughts: a wonderful Tsui Hark film about three women making an unlikely alliance to overthrow Yuan Shikai. rife with HK-style humor & action, but also addresses the corruption in politics; nationality, identity & belonging amidst political chaos; how women are treated only as objects of desire, and would only be "seen" if they disguise themselves.

Leslie Cheung & Anita Yuen are absolute icons in this film!!! Surprisingly progressive for its time, given that it's a 90's HK comedy films (which was rampant with sexist & misogynistic jokes, which wouldn't be accepted today--just look at Faithfully Yours!)

    Highlights:
    - "They gradually find life gets gayer as it goes along."
    - "Are you gay? *sax solo plays* *camera aggressively shakes & pushes in*
    - The audition scene

imagine Inland Empire, but dreamier, more hazy, more hypnotic, and accompanied with a gamelan soundtrack. Also, that opening line might just be the hardest line I've ever heard:

This film is based on a strange incident that my ex-girlfriend experienced.

In any case, it's not hard to miss the (I presume) Balinese influence in this film. It's almost as if he visited Bali & got a lot of ideas from there. Not to throw shade or anything; on the other hand, I find that it creates a captivating, dream-like, trance-like imagery.
