Superb performances anchor this naturalistic and affecting drama of a female ex-con entering the free world and trying to regain custody of her son, a ward of her sister.
Nicely directed, with natural conversations that seem spontaneous, and relationships that feel lived in, Nicholson is of course sensational at the center but Roberts, Smits, Weixler, Biggs and Weixler all match her efforts.
This could have easily devolved into soap opera and soapbox speeches but it instead maintains a calm tension…
