Superb performances anchor this naturalistic and affecting drama of a female ex-con entering the free world and trying to regain custody of her son, a ward of her sister.

Nicely directed, with natural conversations that seem spontaneous, and relationships that feel lived in, Nicholson is of course sensational at the center but Roberts, Smits, Weixler, Biggs and Weixler all match her efforts.

This could have easily devolved into soap opera and soapbox speeches but it instead maintains a calm tension…

Nice slice of lonely lives finding meaning through an extra curricular gathering. There have been other films like this, everything from Shall We Dance to A Real Pain, and this certainly holds its own among those.

Nice performances, especially from Paget Brewster and Jess Weixler, and some positive moments, though maybe not as deep and resonant as it could have been. There are no huge emotional breakthroughs or realizations, and perhaps that is the point. Small moments make these people feel a little more whole.

5 minutes into this movie, the woman behind me yelled at the woman behind her. “Put your fucking bag away. It’s too fucking loud!”

An hour later, the woman behind me was crying so loud that someone in the audience said, “Jesus, quiet down. It’s just a movie.”

I just sat quietly and tried to decide if I loved it or hated it.
