Rewatching this film as an adult that has been to therapy was truly astounding. Like they went to Amsterdam to visit that author, and sure he was an asshole about it, but he truly did not owe them anything. The man was grieving his child who died of cancer and two people actively dying of cancer come over and insist he explain the meaning of life and to them… guys. Be so for real. Okay? Okay.
So… um… squished eggplant aside, this film felt kind of like it attempted to straddle two different rom com cliches at once. But the thing about nuancing cliche is that in some cases the cliche alone is preferable. It was very random and felt a bit disjointed to me. Also, what was with the blinding color pallet?? Maybe I’m just a hater.
I would like to begin by saying that I only watched this film because my dad forbade my sisters to because of the “insane feminist content” and “man bashing.” To my disappointment, he was wrong! Instead it was all “little girls can be anything they want!” “Barbie doesn’t have to like Ken and patriarchal structures are oppressive to both men and women alike.” And worst of all “be nice to your mom, she’s still just a little girl inside.” How…

JON CHU HAS DONE IT AGAIN. Listen, the acting was wonderful and the storyline has enraptured millions for decades now, but only Chu could make this story the movie it is.
