Think this is my 4th or 5th rewatch. “He’s brilliant at creating family out of whoever is around” has to be one of the best character descriptions ever, and being placed in the opening monologues as it’s meaning will be challenged and tested throughout the film?? SHOWSTOPPING. The opening sequence itself deserves an Oscar. The world + character-building of the opening monologues as a prologue, straight into the first scene in the couples therapy session?!?

A subversive trope of one of the most taboo topics throughout history. Aster has such an eye for shooting suspense and writing gaslighters. It’s the way you feel so disturbed by the actual subject(s) of the abuse, and also the mom for letting it happen, then reasoning with her decision for it, then feeling guilty because of it, but ultimately understanding why she would’ve.

not as scary as hyped up to be, but deeply disconcerting and stomach-churningly wearisome. I love societal commentaries and through ORIGINAL horror concepts, and there’s nothing scarier than horror films reflecting real life issues that could not just very much happen to anyone, but frequently happen on the daily in what’s almost a flaw or folly in human development (teens experiencing peer pressure and the need to fit in worldwide regardless of background). a shocking + well-done allegory, A24 horror stays slaying!
