Rough script with lots of very awkward exposition drags this down a lot, unfortunately. Commits the classic biopic sin of running through years at light speed while dropping famous names, when a tighter, more focused story would've packed a heavier punch.

It's easy to see why Donald Trump tried to get this movie pulled from theaters, because it sidesteps the Donald Trump character that mass media obsesses over - the Donald Trump character that got elected president - entirely. Wonderful, well crafted science fiction story. The set design, acting, and storytelling all really click here to make this intimidating premise work. U Are the Universe's sad, lovely ending elevates it above many of its big budget peers in the sci-fi genre -- a real accomplishment considering the limitations inherent to this story about loneliness.

It was a real privilege to see this premiere at TIFF and hear from the director and crew about the challenges of filming during wartime on a tight budget. I hope we'll see a lot more Ukrainian science fiction in the future.
