I loved this film when I was younger and finally reread the novel as an adult. However when I rewatched the film, I realized that the American interpretation was a far cry from the original.
This film destroyed the original story with misogyny; the female characters are whiny, weak and annoying. Watching this with fresh eyes decades later just made me realize how insidious sexism was during this time, in every aspect of American films.
