Kikuchiyo’s rant about the samurai-farmer relationship elevates this from just a simple, heroic samurai narrative. The village set is amazing; the characters are so stellar that they are more easily remembered by moments and quips rather than names; the final assault is probably the best action sequence in a film. The final silent goodbye is ghostly and bittersweet enough to where its fast pace is barely noticeable. Sure, there are some continuity errors and choppy bits of editing, but that’s just my Cinema Sins generational nerve acting up.
