A Different Man 2024
A lot of people are saying that A Different Man is the male version of the substance, and while both do explore insecurity and humanity's innate insatiability, they are done in vastly different ways. Throughout the film, Edward lives his "first life" unhappy and insecure and when he gets the opportunity to change his appearance, he seizes it. Similarly to the substance, even when he changes into a man more aesthetically appealing, he still experiences unhappiness.

Manchester by the Sea 2016
It's so crazy how everyone can move on, and you're still stuck in your grief. I think it's interesting how people try to ignore it or push past it, and some can't. Depression turns into a comforting blanket and the person you were before has died. You get to the point where you can't feel anything anymore and the only think you can think about are your past mistakes. This movie meant a lot to me as someone who thought I "couldn't beat it" and i love the way it explored the various ways individuals process grief. Truly a touching story.
