I can't believe I used to love this movie so much in my early 20s? I've just realized how much I didn't remember. All the characters are underdeveloped and perhaps that's intentional because there's so much plot, but it's a little disappointing that there are several hollow, inconsequential moments because of that. A Real Pain 2024
I just lost my grandmother, and my sister and I are visiting our motherland in a couple months so this really hit me considering where I am in life right now. Being a child of immigrants can be deeply unsettling. Trying to connect with a past that you are only indirectly connected to can bring a swirl of confusion, guilt, disillusionment. The ending offers no resolution but struck me nonetheless - you can connect with your roots all you want but after the dust settles, you're still the same person. Really stellar performance by Kieran Culkin, I laughed and cried in equal measure.
