On the Beach at Night Alone 2017
I think that, just like any other real story or “based on true events” story, the fact that it’s not just a created script by itself turns the work into a much better piece. Whether on paintings, films, music, etc… it makes any other work grand.
In this case, it would be a bland movie, if not for the context. Not only it’s real, it actually depicts both the director and the main protagonist’s story, and to make such a courageous film by itself, deserves all praise it can get.

Shoplifters 2018
What I love most about Koreeda is the fact that what hits us so hard in his films is the face of reality. Even though this is not a true story, like Nobody Knows, it is true and present in many “families” and families, not only in Japan.
The overthinking is what hurts the most in reality.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance 2002
Probably my fifth favorite, if letterboxd had a fifth place. This is my 6th or 7th time seeing this masterpiece and it keeps getting better. To me this is peak Park Chan Wook. I’ll come back here in a while.

Kids Return 1996
First Kitano film I watch and I think I’m already a fan. Just add yaoi to the genre, come on… The way Shinji looks at Masaru, can’t trick no one buddy…
