Nickel Boys 2024
Absolutely astounding. The first person point of view film making is incredibly ambitious and I’m not sure I’ve seen anything quite like it. It puts you directly into their shoes which makes for a difficult watch due to the painful subject matter, but also acts as an important reminder that this actually happened, to so many people in so many different places, and this prejudice still exists today. I can’t believe this was not nominated for best cinematography at The Oscars. No performance or directing noms as well is insane, The Academy is fucking stupid. What a masterpiece.

Certainly an ambitious film that tries to accomplish a lot, but fails in almost every conceivable way. An inauthentic trans story, a disrespectful depiction of Mexican life and culture, and an ultimately uninspired celebration of womanhood. Even as someone who falls under none of these categories, it’s easy to see there was no intention for genuine representation, and instead results in one of the most misguided and contradicting films that I’ve seen in a long time.
