There is no redemption and no forgiveness for Yong-ho, and rightfully so. A macro-story of historical events, examined at the micro level, Peppermint Candy does not seek to excuse Yong-ho of his sins. Nor does it ask the viewer to “understand” his behavior as a means to explain it away. Instead, it plays out like a trial, with each chapter presenting additional evidence of Yong-ho’s lifetime of crimes and immortality, capitulating to his worst reactive impulses.
