The Rules of the Game 1939
There is so much going on in this film with layers of activity, most of which has consequences. It looks like chaos (because it represents the moral chaos that is being satirised) but the amount of planning and writing to pull that off is magnificent. I keep thinking about this film more as a film than as a social commentary.

The Brutalist 2024
Better than I expected. Beautiful to look at. Compelling world building. Saw some things I didn't want to see, but that's ok. The ending was fascinating. The mystery of the film wasn't clearly identified until it was essentially solved. There was som much happening off screen or sort of out of focus. Felt like a mess at times, but a great cinematic experience.

Phantom Thread 2017
Beautiful to look at and listen to. The story crackles with conflict and attraction. Lewis moves his chin a little which is the best acting I've ever seen. Every actor is right on. I could watch Manville forever. Always surprising: the New Year's Eve scene was astounding. The need to be loved and the love of being needed.

Birth 2004
What a ride. I spent a good part of the first act wondering what was going on, but it was beautiful to look at, so I held on. Authentically disturbing in places and unsatisfying by design. This is a film less about the mystery at the center of it and more about how the protagonist deals with that mystery and her own grief. And how hard it is to say that something is not true when people want to believe those things so badly, which seems timelessly timely. The allusions to Rosemary's Baby are a significant part of how effective this is.
