well, holy shit, this was a lot
(spoilers for the climax specifically)
The panic attack sequence that forms the climax of the film is incredible - it's not gonna be everyone's experience, obviously, but it rang very true to me. The moment Joy forces her way through the tornado of anxiety and finds Anxiety frozen at the controls, barely even able to move her eyes? Hit me like a freight train.
If this helps people who can't comprehend the experience of people who have anxiety to even understand a little? Then that's really good.
This film did a number on me back when it came out (a year before what turned out to be a total breakdown). Turns out it still makes me cry at the end but now just for normal empathetic reasons, so that's something.
Embarrassing for so many people to be referencing Knives Out so heavily here when the Family Inheritance + Mystery Manor = Locked In Murder Mystery tropes have been around basically since the invention of the murder mystery.
So let's call it Christie vibes passed through a comedic lens, some great set pieces for the actual puzzle solving and the subbed version got the spoken humour across really well. I really enjoyed the cast - ridiculously pleased to see a rare protrayal of a scruffy gay man - and the music was on point.
A fun way to pass an hour and a half.
A still from this film has been taunting me from the Netflix "Coming Soon" category for what feels like a year. Thankfully it lived up to expectations - in that there was plenty of good kicking and punching. Big fan of East Asian action choreos getting into the nut kick, I was worried we would lose it with John Wick's retirement(?).
TW: big ones here for references to CSA and the second to last major plot beat surrounds a little girl being in danger related to it, so if that's a no for you then this is a no for you.
